MENTAL HEALTH ON MEN.

Mental Health On Men.

Article by Cyrus Mulinge.

Mental health remains one of the most significant issues affecting men today. Despite efforts to create awareness, men are more likely to suffer in silence than seek help because it is a norm that men have to be strong and responsible .This reality can be attributed to various reasons, including the stigma surrounding mental health, societal norms, traditional gender roles, financial constraints and access to services.

Studies have shown that men are more likely to commit suicide than women due to mental health problems like depression and anxiety. However, men are less likely to seek help or access healthcare services for their mental health problems. One significant reason for this trend is the societal belief that men should be strong and cope with any situation without expressing their emotions. Men often believe that seeking help is a sign of weakness and that they should be able to solve their problems independently.

Moreover, societal norms surrounding masculinity add to this dilemma. Men have always been expected to maintain a masculine front, and these norms dictate that seeking help from others is not an admirable trait. Men may perceive asking for help as a threat to their masculinity and status in society. This toxic masculinity creates a culture of silence, making it harder for men to voice their mental health struggles.

Traditional gender roles also play a role in this issue. Men are typically the primary breadwinners, and the financial responsibilities that come with this can make them more prone to stress and anxiety. Additionally, the pressure to conform to traditional gender roles and to present themselves as the ideal male contributes to feelings of inadequacy and shame, which can affect their mental health.

Financial constraints and access to healthcare services, especially mental health services, is also a significant issue that affects men's well-being. In most cases, mental health treatments are not cheap, and health insurance may not cover these costs, making access to healthcare difficult for people who cannot afford it. This issue affects men more than women as men are more prone to experience financial pressure in meeting their family obligations.

There are measures that can be taken to improve men's mental health. One effective solution is to create awareness surrounding the importance of seeking help and speaking up about mental health. Men must understand that taking care of oneself is not a sign of weakness. Societal norms that contribute to toxic masculinity must be addressed, we must encourage men to talk about their feelings, and we must make understanding and empathetic ear available to them. Introducing mental health education in schools and workplaces can help create a supportive environment where men can seek help without fear of judgment.

In conclusion, mental health remains a significant issue that affects men today. There is a need to reframe the narrative surrounding mental health and masculinity. Society must create an environment that encourages men to voice their struggles, access necessary healthcare services, and seek help when needed. Breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health will go a long way in improving men's mental health, thus facilitating happier and healthier lives.

The end.
